DIY CONCRETE FIREPLACE

Our primary bedroom is pretty large and I really wanted to add some cozy in here… which led me to DIY this fireplace. It’s so budget friendly, makes a statement in the room and even from down the hall, it’s a wow factor. We absolutely love the function and the look of it!

Reed built the frame using 2x4’s. I wanted at least a foot on each side of the fireplace And also for it to be about 6 inches off the ground. I decided on a height of about 52”. Our ceilings are only 8 feet tall so I took that into consideration when I was choosing the height of our fireplace. I sketched it out and he built it according to those measurements. I added top and bottom trim last minute to give it a little something extra. I like the mix of modern + detailed.

We did have to add a plug because of course I choose the only wall that doesn’t have one. It was fairly easy because the other side of this wall is still gutted. The link for our fireplace insert can be found HERE!

Then we added sheetrock, corner-beading and did the usual tape + mud of the seams. We painted the fireplace with a primer (any paint will work because you are going to cover it in the texture). Next I added my Surecrete concrete micro topping to the fireplace. I went ahead and did two coats to get the look I wanted. This is the same texture that I did in the girls’ bathroom. I got the idea from Leanne Ford and I absolutely love it. Sharing the products used for the texture below.

FIREPLACE TEXTURE:

• Surecrete MicroTek Micro Topping

• Surecrete Charcoal Color Pack

Bucket

• Paddle mixer attachment + drill

• Drywall Knife

• Concrete Sealer + paint brush

PROCESS:

( I mixed it in smaller portions so it wouldn’t dry out. I was 9 months prego and moving slow 😆)

• add a 1/3 bag of microtek to bucket + 1/3 bag of color pack

• add water slowly while mixing with drill attachment - until it makes a batter like consistency

• use drywall knife to spread on wall in upward motions and fanning out. I played around with this. Think of the Venetian plaster look.

• seal with concrete sealer + paint brush
